As the information technology has become more and more advanced, sending letters is no longer the only way to communicate with others. Sending E-mail and using ICQ are other popular alternatives. ICQ is especially popular among teenagers nowadays. Although ICQ seems to have a lot of advantages, it still has a lot of drawbacks.

 

There is no doubt that using ICQ is fun. Besides words, we can also use similes to express ourselves when using ICQ. The colour and the style of the font can also vary according to the favor of the users. Games can be also be played by the user anytime they want when chatting. Can you play games with your friends in a sudden when communicating with your friend using E-mail?

 

However, using ICQ does a lot of harm on our language skills. I think most of the ICQ users won’t type a complete sentence when communicating. Instead of typing a complete sentence they will type in short form. They don’t even want to type a complete word sometimes. ‘Before’ becoming ‘b4’ is a typical example. As we speak Cantonese every day, our English writing may sound like Chinglish. Same as using ICQ, if we use those short forms too often, these short forms, which are neither English nor Chinese, may appear in our writing. That could be a big disaster to our language!

 

Although short forms can ruin our language skills, it is very convenient. Using the example used before, ‘Before’ and ‘B4’. Typing which word is faster? The answer is now where to be seen. It can show our expression in a faster way, even can be as fast as using telephone. The file transferor installed inside is also very beneficial. When having discussions on certain topic or may be doing projects, ICQ will become a very powerful tool as we can carry out discussion in a faster way together with files can be transferred very easily.

 

Do you know how many numbers are there in an ICQ number? There are nine numbers. Just a single number more than a telephone number. So adding a user to your ICQ contact list may just cost you a few seconds. As it is too convenient to add a user and ICQ user seldom use there real names. Hackers may use this golden opportunity to make use of the file transferor to spread out virus. Meeting strangers is easy when using ICQ, it is of course dangerous. However the most dangerous is having a date with those strangers. How can you ensure that they are trust worthy if you just chatted with them using ICQ?

 

ICQ is beneficial or harmful depends on how you use it. Use it wisely to make it become your powerful tool but not the drugs ruining your language skills.
